About the conference

The Institute’s third North West Employment Law Update Conference looked at changes to employment law, in the context of the economic and ideological climate of the current Con-Dem government.

The conference welcomed a broad mix of speakers across a range of disciplines.

Avis Gilmore, Regional secretary from the NUT opened the day with a view from the Education Sector.

Joel Smith of Thompsons Solicitors looked at the Rights to Collective Consultation and Prof. Gregor Gall gave an insightful view of Ballots Injuctions and the Future of Industrial Action

Sarah Veale spoke realistically about the role of the TUC and a TUC document The Road To Recovery: How Effective Unions Can Help Rebuild The Economy was provided in the delegate pack.

After lunch the conference took on a more legal perspective. Barrister Kerry Smith of Garden Court North, spoke about successful Sexual Orientation Discrimination cases, and Paul Draycott of Doughty Street Chambers about Unfair Dismissal cases and a recent Employment Tribunal Judgement . The day was rounded off by Ellie Reeves of Thompsons Solicitors who spoke on Changes to the National Minimum Wage. The conference was supported by the Ken Gill Memorial Fund
