Ambulance callouts to the Asos warehouse in Grimethorpe totalled 45 last year – averaging at nearly one a week.

This is according to official figures released after Freedom of Information requests by the Press Association, which also found that paramedics attended JD Sports' Rochdale site 40 times over 12 months.

Matt Draper of Unite the Union likened the workplaces to "dark satanic mills", while GMB Regional Secretary, Neil Derrick, accused Asos of being "in denial about the inhuman conditions people have to work under".

"They are making millions while workers are literally being taken away in ambulances," he added.

"Their desperate drive for profit has created a damaging, anxiety-ridden workplace that is hazardous to our members' health."
