IER plan for workers could help “eliminate” blacklisting, says UNITE Assistant General Secretary

Assistant General Secretary of UNITE the Union Gail Cartmail has welcome the Institute of Employment Rights’ Manifesto for Labour Law, stating that the policies it proposes would be instrumental in the fight against blacklisting if it was taking on by the next Labour government.
The 25 policy recommendations included in the Manifesto, which was authored by 15 leading labour lawyers and academics from some of the UK’s most prestigious universities, will be announced at a free event in Westminster tomorrow, at which Gail will speak.
"Bringing to court the major construction contractors who covertly and systematically blacklisted workers is an important chapter in the campaign to eliminate this pernicious discrimination. Yet everyone in the industry knows blacklisting persists. Tougher law is crucial but so is industrial collective strength.
“This publication addresses both and I welcome the recommendations,” she said.
Gail will be joined on the platform by Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell; Shadow Minister for Trade Unions, Ian Lavery; the General Secretaries of the CWU, FBU and NUT, and a Senior Policy Officer of the TUC.
The speakers will discuss a new deal for workers in a post-EU UK.
