Labour vows to abolish youth rates
17 May 2019
Labour has this week vowed to abolish youth rates – the lower National Minimum Wage for young people.
Currently, workers under the age of 18 are legally entitled to only £4.35 an hour, but under Labour's proposals their pay would increase to the £10 per hour minimum the Party has promised to establish for everyone in employment.
Jeremy Corbyn said he would "end this discrimination" against younger people, adding "you don't get a discount at the shops for being under 18. But if the person serving you on the other side of the counter is also young, they could be on half the wage of their colleagues".
Labour has said it will use the savings it accrues from significantly reducing the amount that needs to be spent on in-work benefits to support smaller businesses.
