Michael MacNeil is UCU’s (University and College Union) National Head of Bargaining and Negotiations. He has long-involvement in industrial relations, working for a number of trade unions and across the public and private sectors and has spoken frequently on the privatisation of public services, tertiary education, and employers’ motivations when engaging in public policy debates.

In higher education the bosses often consider themselves to sit at the more enlightened and progressive end of the employers’ spectrum. They do, however, preside over obscene levels of casualisation, with ridiculous numbers of zero hour teaching contracts and with 67% of research staff on fixed-term contracts.
